Saturday saw a big game, for Westleigh 1's, against an Oundle side that had not lost in 25 games.
The changing room banter was subdued this week, with a few tunes played to liven the mood. Simon's classic 'cone formation' was in full force and things were looking good.
The whistle blew to start the game and Westleigh were looking good. Pinging the ball from left to right, it almost looked as though they had practised this on the training field. Oundle only had one route out of the back.. an almighty flick down field. Once Joe had mastered the sandy 'bounce', he was lapping them up to great effect.
The game saw a scrappy 15 minutes in the first half with sparks of skill from Damo down the wing. At one point he got a little too excited and decided to mount the opposition defender. This got the Oundle team chuntering.. mainly because they were on the back foot.
Towards the end of the half saw Joe play a ball through to Sam for a 2 on 1 attack with Nooney. This did not end well. Whether it was the bright whites of Nooney's eyes (thinking he may score his first league goal of the season), whether it was the sticky pitch or whether it was just 'one of those games' for Sam, Sam ended up getting the ball stuck under his feet and letting the Oundle defence get back to retrieve the ball. Sam let out an almighty 'FUDGE' as he knew he let the team down.
Nevertheless, Westleigh ground it out to halftime and the teams went in honours even.
The second half started as the first had ended, some good runs up the wings by Westleigh left the Oundle players in their tracks. It has to be said that there were some blind passes from the righthand side of the pitch but its not the end of the world. Some good defensive play from Simon created some more good play down the right wing which saw Sibo creep into he D, his eyes focused on the ball. Secretly all Westleigh players were screaming 'PASS IT.. PASS IT' in their heads but Sibo ignored everyone and smashed it past the keeper. 1 - 0 Westleigh!!
Oundle's restart saw Sam gifted a green card due to his own stupidity and not being 5m away.
The game was drawing to a close and Oundle were becoming rattled, arguing with the umpires and giving away some scrappy fouls.
Westleigh formed the classic half court press until the final whistle to grind out their third win on the bounce.
A huge cheer broke out from the Westleigh players as they knew it had been a tougher match than anticipated.
