The club offers coaching and games for Girls and Boys from the age of 5 to 18. The club's aim is to provide a fun and safe environment for players of all abilities to learn the key skills and team play of hockey. Training takes place on a Tuesday night, 6:30-7:30pm and a Sunday morning, 10:00-12:00am at English Martyrs Catholic School. Free taster sessions are always on offer and equipment can be borrowed. Those under the age of 8 years and have never played before are advised to attend the Sunday morning sessions to start with.
First Stage - An Introduction to Hockey
The first stage is to introduce players to fun engaging games letting the participants have fun, learning without knowing. As the players grow in skill and confidence more coaching is added but still through testing games. Through all of this we also hope to develop fitness, team work and confidence. Players will get to use these new skills in mini tournaments on Sundays aimed at development through Leicestershire Schools and Youth hockey. These are all about everyone playing, win or loose (although try telling that to the players).
Children aged between 5-8 years old are invited to take part in a block of Hockey Heroes sessions to begin with on Sunday mornings. Leicester Westleigh run the Hockey Heroes scheme, which is partnered with England Hockey. Hockey Heroes provides fun and exciting hockey session for younger children between the ages of 5-8. These sessions will develop the fundamental hockey skills as well as unlocking the children's superpowers such as confidence, teamwork, fairness and resilience. Once they have completed a block they are then welcome to join Leicester Westleigh and have access to two training sessions per week.
Next stage - Tournament Play
The club has a variety of junior teams (U8, U10, U12, U14) entering the England Hockey cup competitions and other local club tournaments. These are more competitive and the club have done well over the last few years getting medals at U10 and U12's. The U12s impressively came runners up in the County Cup losing only on penalty flicks. This led to them representing Leicestershire in the Midlands competition. We also enter the U14s England Tier 3 development league. At under 12 and under 14 ages players will also begin to develop within full pitch hockey through our badgers and 4th team setup.
